 WBAY COVERAGE ON CNN STORY

Suamico

WBAY TV CNN Interview March 17, 2004

By Jason Allen

A Suamico teenager received national attention Wednesday night for his work helping cancer patients. CNN, the cable news network, featured Anthony Leanna in its series "America's Bright Future."

Millions of TV watchers were introduced to Heavenly Hats-- Anthony's idea to provide hats for cancer patients-- and it took less than ten seconds for viewers across the country to respond.

Wednesday, Anthony was sitting in the back of language arts class at Bay View Middle School just like any other day, keeping notes, keeping track of homework assignments, and keeping on schedule for the bus ride home.

But that's where the average day ended. And CNN began, "We begin with Anthony Leanna. He started a program called Heavenly Hats."

"My mom had called us and said they were coming to interview me Monday, and they were coming to my school, and I was just shocked that they were coming," Anthony said.

Anthony and his parents watched the report, anxious for the exposure, and anticipating a big response.

"I think it will always be a big thing getting the word out," said Anthony, "because it seems like every time I get the word out I get more and more donations to come in."

Sure enough, no sooner did his phone number appear on televisions around the world than the phone rang. It was a donor.

We asked Anthony where the caller was from. "She didn't say. She just said, 'I saw your program on CNN and I'm gonna give a cash donation. Where do you live?'" Anthony laughed happily.

The hats that are already sent out across the nation could now be coming in from around the nation as well. Anthony says he's in need of women's hats right now.

"Heavenly Hats will always be a part of my future as long as people keep donating hats to me," he said.

Anthony's next goal is to turn Heavenly Hats into an official non-profit organization.
